University - The Particular

The little big city of Göttingen offers a unique combination of a world-renowned university and a small student-friendly atmosphere. Around one quarter of Göttingen's population are students: culture and nightlife are tailored towards students' needs.

Göttingen students benefit from exchange programmes with 420 partner universities around the world, English-language degree programmes, and a growing number of double degrees. A close-mesh advisory network, from study preparation to career services, provides students with optimal planning support.

Study Programme - Main Focus

As a comprehensive university, the University of Göttingen offers a wide range of study programmes covering virtually all subjects, from A for agricultural sciences to Z for zoology. Many so-called "exotic subjects" that can only be studied at a handful of universities in Germany are taught in language and cultural sciences. The wide range of course offerings enables students to choose from a whole host of combination options and to gain interdisciplinary training from day one. Great importance is attached to research at all stages of the degree programme: even at bachelor’s degree level, students are encouraged to initiate their own research projects within special programmes.

Background - The Insight

Göttingen is connected with many Nobel Prize winners: almost 50 laureates have lived, taught, studied or conducted research here. One reason for this is probably the excellent cooperation with top-class research institutes in the area: four Max Planck institutes, the German Primate Center and the German Aerospace Center form such a well-connected network on the Göttingen Campus that the next award is just a matter of time.

What's special here?

Kissing wisely: The "Gänseliesel" statue at the fountain in front of the Old City Hall is traditionally kissed by all newly qualified PhD graduates. They parade through the city in imaginatively decorated carts, duly celebrating their graduation. The Gänseliesel is left with a bouquet of flowers to hold in her arms, which is fresh on most days: around 700 students graduate with a doctorate in Göttingen each year.

I study at the University of Göttingen because...

"...the city is incredibly diverse for its size, and everything is within easy reach – whether it's lectures, parks, sports or bars. I love campus life, the university sports programme, the cultural offerings, the parties and the excellent support. Göttingen offers the ideal mix of studying, community and leisure activities."

Where to meet

Centrally located, excellently equipped, noise-protected: the Learning and Study Building (LSG) on campus offers around 650 very well-equipped individual and group workspaces for students. Not just during exam preparation: The LSG is a welcome alternative to studying in your own room or at the kitchen table. Highlight: Saturday childcare for student parents.
