University - The Particular

Small study groups, application-oriented education, even in the area of research, and numerous continuing education programmes geared to different target groups are just some of the features that make the Hochschule Hannover – University of Applied Sciences and Arts stand out. What's more, the Hochschule Hannover is also an "open university". By opening university education to holders of vocational qualifications, work experience can be transferred to educational careers in higher education. The Hochschule Hannover supports this target group with specific programmes to help them complete their university career successfully.

Study Programme - Main Focus

Around 8,900 students benefit from the diverse opportunities offered by studying at the Hochschule Hannover. Internationally oriented yet locally rooted, the Hochschule Hannover offers an exceptionally diverse range of subjects. In addition to Engineering Science, Business Studies and Social Services, the Expo Plaza campus of the Hochschule Hannover offers a wide range of media and creative degree programmes at an internationally renowned level of educational quality. Furthermore, the Hochschule Hannover offers students numerous opportunities to study while they work, and promotes the development of innovative degree programmes and learning methods.

Background - The Insight

Back in 1791, the "Freye Handwerksschule für Lehrlinge" – the "drafting school" – was founded as the oldest predecessor institution of the Hochschule Hannover. In 1971, the Hochschule Hannover was created from different predecessor institutions, comprising five faculties at multiple locations in Hannover. Faculties I and II were founded as the successors of the "Ingenierakademie", which itself had its origins in the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the "Handwerker und Kunstgewerbeschule" from 1892.

What's special here?

The "BrauAG" (brewing working group) of the Hochschule Hannover consists of students from different disciplines. Besides their passion for enjoying beer, they are curious about the optimal transformation of natural raw materials to a finished product. In our brewing cellar, they can develop new ideas for beer creations and implement them in initial tests on a 10L scale. Once a recipe has matured, it finds its way to the 100L large-scale system. The annual highlight is our participation in the international brewing competition of universities at the Technical University of Hamburg, which we even won in 2018! In teaching, beer brewing is part of the laboratory course during the compulsory elective module in bioprocess technology.
