University - The Particular

As the only institution of its kind, Hannover University of Music, Drama and Media (HMTMH) occupies a special place on Lower Saxony's academic as well as cultural scene. With up to 500 events open to the public every year, it is one of the largest organisers of cultural events in the federal state. Eleven institutes serve as hubs for networking, creating impetus and conducting unique research. The disciplines of acting and media management complement HMTMH's outstanding reputation as a music academy, making it one of Germany's five largest art universities.

Study Programme - Main Focus

The balance between music, drama, education and academic research, as well as the commitment to excellence in both elite and broader training form the core of the university’s identity. To this end, HMTMH provides a diverse range of degree programmes, supplemented by numerous master classes. Music plays the key role. Thanks to many cross-discipline art research projects, interdisciplinary work is carried out in almost all fields.

Background - The Insight

HMTMH traces its history back to the "Landesmusikschule" (State music school) and the "Hannoversche Schauspielschule" (Hannover Drama School), both of which were founded as early as the 19th century. They merged to form the "Akademie für Musik und Theater" (Academy of Music and Theatre) in 1950; in 1973, the federal state of Lower Saxony became responsible for managing the University. In 1978, the University of Music and Drama received the status of an art university, including the right to award doctoral degrees and to confer habilitation qualifications. In 2010, it added the term "media" to its name. Today, its institutes and students are spread across various places around the city – from the east side of Hannover to the Expo Plaza.

What's special here?

Over the years, the "ear" has become the trademark of HMTMH. The main building on "Neues Haus" square is often associated with this from a bird’s eye view. In fact, architect Rolf Ramcke was designing an "arena" in 1972 that opens up towards the Eilenriede city forest.
