Financing

Funding

Studying can be a financial challenge. To make it easier for refugees to access higher education and to support them as they begin their studies, many universities in Lower Saxony are waiving fees that are normally charged for services such as sports classes, a library card or guest student status. Some universities offer free German language courses. In addition, there are specific financial support schemes aimed at refugees.

Scholarships

Various foundations and organisations offer refugees scholarships and special support with language learning as part of their preparation for higher education. An overview is provided by the programme "Bildungsberatung Garantiefonds Hochschule", which is funded by the Federal Ministry for Education, Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth and supports young immigrants in Germany with planning and pursuing their academic careers.

Lower Saxony scholarship

Through the Lower Saxony scholarship (Landesstipendium Niedersachsen), the State of Lower Saxony supports talented young people facing difficult circumstances and challenging conditions, including students who have found refuge in Lower Saxony. The scholarship consists of a one-off grant of 500 euros. The selection process is carried out by the universities. For further information, please contact the advisor on site.

BAföG

BAföG is the state financial support scheme for students in Germany. Regardless of how long they have been living in Germany, recognised refugees (those entitled to asylum, refugees who have been granted refugee status or subsidiary protection) can apply for BAföG.

Refugees who hold a tolerated stay permit (Duldung) can receive BAföG after at least 15 months of uninterrupted lawful stay in Germany.

Asylum seekers whose applications have not yet been decided cannot apply for BAföG. They receive support under the Asylum-Seeker Benefits Act.

For further information, or if your legal status/residence permit is not listed here, please refer to § 8 BAföG. The social counselling services at your local "Studierendenwerk" offer information on the various funding options.
