University - The Particular

The Braunschweig University of Art (HBK Braunschweig) is an internationally oriented art university with the right to grant doctorates and habilitation qualifications. With around 1,000 students and 50 chairs, the HBK Braunschweig is one of the largest art academies in Germany. The HBK Braunschweig offers 13 degree programmes in Fine Arts, Art Education, Performing Arts, Design, Art History, Media Studies, and Visual Communication, all in a close-knit, personal atmosphere.

Study Programme - Main Focus

Students at the HBK Braunschweig have 5,000 square metres of workshop and lab space at their disposal to experiment with traditional and innovative artistic methods, whether it's working with wood, metals, plastics, paper or ceramics, or sculpture, modelling, typography, layout design or different printing techniques. The facilities also include a photo studio and labs for analogue and digital photography, as well as workstations for film and video, sound art, computer animation and computer-aided design. Students benefit from the professional assistance of highly qualified staff members in the various labs and workshops.

Background - The Insight

The Hochschul-Galerie, the Montagehalle (the old factory production hall) and other places in and around the HBK Braunschweig host a variety of temporary exhibitions. Many of these exhibitions are the culmination of student projects, or collaborations with students at the HBK Braunschweig.

The HBK Braunschweig's hallmark, its library, is housed in Mexico's former Expo Pavilion, designed by the world-renowned Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta.

What's special here?

Every year at the end of the summer semester, the HBK Braunschweig opens its doors to the public. During the Open Week, student work is showcased from all disciplines, enabling visitors to attend exhibitions, presentations, discussions, lectures, film screenings, theatre productions, performances, and much more besides.
