University - The Particular

Two locations with an abundance of greenery, linked by an area of protected landscape. Lots of light, air and openness to new approaches: that is the University of Oldenburg. The focus is on its students. They are involved in science and their future professional practice at an early stage. Diverse teaching and learning formats, good supervision ratios and a campus university with short distances ensure great learning conditions. As a pioneer of the "open university", the University of Oldenburg also paves the way for professionally qualified students who start their studies without the "Abitur" (general higher education entrance qualification).

Study Programme - Main Focus

How is climate change changing our lives? What will the hearing aid of the future be capable of? How do animals find their way? How do we impart new knowledge? Whether it's energy or education research, medicine, marine biology or social sciences – the University of Oldenburg teaches and conducts research in many promising fields. There are study opportunities in education, social and economic sciences, computer science, cultural, linguistic and social sciences, natural sciences, mathematics and medicine. The university is particularly well known and popular for its teacher training.

Background - The Insight

Founded in 1973, the University of Oldenburg is one of Germany's younger universities. It is named after Nobel Peace Prize winner Carl von Ossietzky, one of the most prominent journalists and pacifists of the Weimar Republic. It is therefore part of the university's self-image to conduct its research in a socially responsible manner and to place it at the service of peace and democracy. Our motto is "Open to new paths", which is reflected in many ways. For example, the University of Oldenburg is one of the best start-up universities in Germany.

What's special here?

Sustainability issues have a long tradition in teaching and research at the University of Oldenburg. The university also continuously works on sustainability and climate protection aspects in its operations – ranging from photovoltaic systems and Fairtrade products to the "Tiny Forest" on campus. Many students are involved in their own initiatives.

Studierender der Uni Oldenburg

I study at University of Oldenburg because…

"I have been studying at the University of Oldenburg for a year now and feel very much at home here. This is due to my field of study, but also very much to Oldenburg itself and the people who have welcomed and supported me. The campus isn’t just about studying; there are also dozens of leisure activities available. Beside sports, I am currently brushing up on my French. The canteen is really important – it's a real highlight!"
