University - The Particular

One of the distinguishing features of Clausthal University of Technology is its location: a campus in a green setting. Other distinguishing features are the modest size of the University and its compact layout, fostering personal interaction and a cosmopolitan atmosphere. After all, around 30 per cent of its students come from all around the world, making the university of technology, located in the Harz Mountains, one of the most international universities in Germany. Thanks to the University's location in a low mountain range and the extensive range of sporting opportunities on offer, students and scholars find it easy to relax after a hard day's study or work.

Study Programme - Main Focus

For more than 240 years, Clausthal has produced qualified engineers and natural scientists, with the University evolving out of the internationally renowned Bergakademie (Mining Academy of Clausthal). Economists have also been qualified there since the turn of the millennium. Emphasis is placed on the fields of energy and raw materials, materials science, mechanical engineering, process engineering and informatics.

Background - The Insight

After studying at Clausthal University of Technology, many graduates have gone on to become executives in business or science, among them several board members of DAX companies and university presidents. One outstanding example is Professor Wan Gang, who has been the Minister of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China for many years. The automobile engineer was a research assistant at Clausthal's Institute of Mechanical Engineering from 1985 to 1990, and received his doctorate at the University in 1990. Today, Wan Gang is an honorary professor at his former university.

What's special here?

Clausthal University of Technology is the only university in Germany that has two winter semesters, as the saying goes among all those who have studied in the Harz. After all, snowfall may also occur at the beginning of the summer semester in April, owing to the University's location in the low mountain range. Then again, Clausthal University of Technology is the only university in Germany located in a winter sports area.
