University - The Particular

A moderately sized campus university. Two locations with an abundance of greenery, linked by an area of protected landscape. Lots of light, air and openness to new approaches. This is how the University of Oldenburg can be described at first glance. Those who study here soon realise that the university focuses primarily on its students. They are involved in science and research at an early stage, with a view to promoting research-oriented learning. Sensibly sized seminars, a close relationship between the teaching staff and learners, and short distances ensure great learning conditions.

Study Programme - Main Focus

Marine Research, Computing Science, or Medicine in a unique degree programme with the University of Groningen? Or perhaps a degree in Teacher Education at the only higher education institution in Lower Saxony that trains teachers for all tracks of schooling? The University of Oldenburg offers a wide range of study options from social sciences, economics, educational science, cultural sciences, linguistics, computing science, mathematics, the natural sciences and medicine.

Background - The Insight

Open to new approaches – the university's maxim is reflected in many aspects. Such as in the entrepreneurial culture on campus. Even at the undergraduate stage, students are encouraged to view self-employment as a potential career option. In light of this, the University of Oldenburg is one of the six best start-up universities in Germany – as designated by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.

By naming itself after Carl von Ossietzky, the University of Oldenburg emphasises that the scientific community has a great responsibility towards society and must engage in public discourse.

What's special here?

Over 70,000 eight to twelve-year-olds have attended lectures at Oldenburg's Children's University in recent years. They all agree that "Children's University is cool" – just like the rest of the university! Today, some of the first Children's University alumni are now actually studying at "their" university.
